DIY: Cold weather knitting (and free patterns!)

It’s starting to get cold out! Which means one thing: I want to knit lots of things to wear for winter.

I made this hat in March of last year, but wore it only twice before it was too warm to wear it. Then, I decided to make a pair of mitts to go with it. Not the same pattern, but I liked that they’re both cabled and “go” together.

I like fingerless mitts because I can do lots of other things with them on: use phone or iPad, knit, etc. Basically, things I do during my commute.

I used Malabrigo Silky Merino for both, in Green Gray. Not the same dye lot (I didn’t buy them at the same time), so they’re SLIGHTLY different in shade. Can you tell? I can, but I figure my hands and hat are far enough away from one another that it’s not the end of the world.

Here is the pattern for the Hermione Hat, and the pattern for the Fetching Mitts.

Modifications I made to the Fetching Mitts: 2 additional rounds of cables, followed by 6 rows of the 4×1 ribbing before binding off. I wanted them to be a little longer than the pattern.

And I made this Star Crossed Slouchy Beret:

I knit this in Spud & Chloe sweater yarn in Splash. The pattern is a free PDF download on Ravelry.com.

Super easy knit, too. I did find that the band seemed more apt to stretching than I’d prefer. So, to remedy that, I added a line of elastic thread to the brim Voila. Problem solved.

I hope this helps someone! Happy knitting!
